Ballyclare Colts partnering with 1st Ballyeaston Girls Brigade

Thursday, 7 April, 2011

Local Ballyclare soccer club ‘ Ballyclare Colts’ in conjuction with ‘1st Ballyeaston Girls Brigade’ agreed to team up for a four week soccer skill training period under the tuition of U12 coaches Terry Bell and Alex McRae.

Not knowing how the girls would respond, coaches were apprehensive. Worry though – they need not……

Enthusiasm oozed from the young ladies from the start.

An array of soccer drills were set in front of the girls and my goodness they really did respond well.

Attributes such as skill, determination, diligence and team work were displayed in abundance during the three weeks training.

On the final week the GB leaders suggested the girls should go to the fantastic ‘Soccer Shed’ to play a proper game after some warm-up drills, and they did….

The game commenced with Sian Agnew assuming the duties of goalkeeper for team G. Sian did sterling work here though looked somewhat timid on occasions by poking her toe in here and there.

Meanwhile Emma Patterson was running the show! – even taking the hand out of the coaches with the odd ‘Nut-Meg through the legs’ (won’t forget that Emma).

For team B, Nicole McConnell started off in goal then got fed up, played outfield and showed what a good player she is. Nicole was shooting from her own half at times and with ‘a kick like a mule’ rarely missed…

With the GB leaders encouraging from the gallery (lead by the vociferious and enthusiastic team mascot Joanne Woodside) some good play ensued.

Danielle McClenaghan was now working very hard in midfield and Claudia Kirk (who scored a couple) – poacher that she - is played well. Danielle Allen and Lucinda McAuley had a right old ding dong during the game. Boy, did they want to win….. Rebecca Todd worked tirelessly all game whilst Tanya-Kim Warwick showed some silky skills throughout. Meagan Boyd and Shauna-Lee Warwick looked dangerous at all times during the game. Grace Gilmour and Sophie McAllen unfortunately couldn’t make the Soccer Shed due to other commitments. We missed you girls but thanks for your hard work during the previous three weeks.

On behalf of Ballyclare Colts FC, Terry Bell and Alex McCrae would like to thank the officers and members of 1st Ballyeaston GB for inviting us to run a coaching block with the girls. We were very impressed with the attitude, respect and aptitude applied during our four week stint and would like to wish the company every success in the future and hope to repeat the venture at a later date.
